There's nothing "wrong" with it, it's just the neophyte aspect I'm attacking.
When in doubt, KISS, and obvious CNAMES have enough restrictions on them
they are not Stupidly Simple.
... combined with the CNAME chains
... combined with CNAME as MX or NS hostname
gettting the CNAME host's A record back in the same packet, hmm, that would
certainly not be two queries, except as you say the CNAME host is out of
the zone.
