IIRC, OS X's lookupd has, or had, a case-sensitivity problem that manifests
something like you describe. I don't recall the exact details of it, and I
thought that I had heard it had been fixed somewhere around 10.1, but perhaps
it has not been. It really should be considered a bug because domain names are
supposed to be case insensitive.
