Class C reverse delegationFrom: Alan McCarty Date: Tuesday, March 12, 2002
Time: 8:22:23 amHi-
I have a question that I can't seem to find the answer to in previous
discussions. I/We own the class C of 64.80.175.0 and have requested
delegation of the reverse DNS for this subnet. Paetec.net (ISP) has
granted us this delegation but I'm not sure it's working. The server we
have assigned this reverse lookup to is ns1.ecornell.com.
When I dig 175.80.64.addr-in.arpa (for name servers) I get the following:
; <<>> DiG 2.1 <<>> @maggie.menandmice.is 175.80.64.in-addr.arpa NS
; (1 server found)
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 10
;; flags: qr rd ra; Ques: 1, Ans: 2, Auth: 0, Addit: 2
;; QUESTIONS:
;; 175.80.64.in-addr.arpa, type = NS, class = IN
;; ANSWERS:
175.80.64.in-addr.arpa. 81263 NS ns1.paetec.net.
175.80.64.in-addr.arpa. 81263 NS ns2.paetec.net.
;; ADDITIONAL RECORDS:
ns1.paetec.net. 167649 A 64.80.255.250
ns2.paetec.net. 167649 A 64.80.255.251

;; FROM: us.mirror.menandmice.com to SERVER: maggie.menandmice.is
217.151.171.7
;; WHEN: Tue Mar 12 09:15:34 2002
;; MSG SIZE sent: 40 rcvd: 118
When I dig any of the IP's within that subnet (64.80.175.19 for example)
I get the following:
; <<>> DiG 2.1 <<>> @maggie.menandmice.is 19.175.80.64.in-addr.arpa NS
; (1 server found)
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 10
;; flags: qr rd ra; Ques: 1, Ans: 2, Auth: 0, Addit: 1
;; QUESTIONS:
;; 19.175.80.64.in-addr.arpa, type = NS, class = IN
;; ANSWERS:
19.175.80.64.in-addr.arpa. 81516 NS ns1.ecornell.com.
19.175.80.64.in-addr.arpa. 81516 NS ns2.ecornell.com.
;; ADDITIONAL RECORDS:

My question is this: Shouldn't ns1.ecornell.com and ns2.ecornell.com be
listed as the name servers for 175.80.64.in-addr.arpa if we've
supposedly been delegated responsibility for reverse DNS for that class
C?
Any input is appreciated...
