Re: Problem with the reverse routeFrom: Men & Mice Support Date: Tuesday, March 12, 2002
Time: 9:31:31 amYour reverse zone is not seen by the outside world, because that zone
is not delegated to you. The delegation is a bit of a mess. Here's
what I found:
from a root server (f.root-servers.net):
195.in-addr.arpa. NS ns.ripe.net.
195.in-addr.arpa. NS ns.eu.net.
195.in-addr.arpa. NS auth03.ns.uu.net.
195.in-addr.arpa. NS ns2.nic.fr.
195.in-addr.arpa. NS sunic.sunet.se.
195.in-addr.arpa. NS munnari.oz.au.
195.in-addr.arpa. NS ns.apnic.net.
from ns.eu.net:
101.195.in-addr.arpa. NS ns.ripe.net.
101.195.in-addr.arpa. NS ns.global-ip.net.
101.195.in-addr.arpa. NS bow.rain.fr.
101.195.in-addr.arpa. NS ns3.nic.fr.
101.195.in-addr.arpa. NS proof.rain.fr.
Here's where things get strange. If I follow this referral to
ns3.nic.fr, I get the following authoritative response:
101.195.in-addr.arpa. SOA bow.rain.fr. root.rain.frr. (
2002031203 ; serial
8H ; refresh
2H ; retry
1W ; expiry
1D ) ; minimum
which means that there definitively is no such record.
But if I instead query bow.rain.fr (the master server for the class B
reverse zone, according to the SOA record), I get:
88.101.195.in-addr.arpa. NS bow.rain.fr.
88.101.195.in-addr.arpa. NS proof.rain.fr.
=46urthermore, since I've queried one of these two servers, I also get:
1.88.101.195.in-addr.arpa. CNAME 1.0-31.88.101.195.in-addr.arpa.
However, there are no NS records for 0-31.88.101.195.in-addr.arpa,
which would be required to make this classless subnet delegation
work. If I specifically ask for it, the response is marked "SERVFAIL".
So, to summarize:
- The class B subnet reverse zone is delegated normally.
- Of the 5 servers for the class B subnet, 3 think there's no
delegation for the class C subnet. 2 disagree, and claim authority
for that class C subnet reverse zone. This tells me that there's no
delegation for the class C reverse zone in the class B reverse zone.
- From the class C subnet reverse zone, there appears to be half of a
classless subnet reverse zone delegation, but only half.
These two problems need to be worked out (by rain.fr) before any PTR
record you create will work. You'll also probably need to create a
classless subnet reverse zone named 0-31.88.101.195.in-addr.arpa,
instead of your current class C reverse zone.
