Headless (non)operation on OSXFrom: David Hooper Date: Monday, April 29, 2002
Time: 5:11:21 amI hope someone can help with this critical problem with OSX. Apple seem
unable or unwilling to help even thought the implications for them are huge.
I've just been setting up our OSX server (a G4-800) and it won't boot up
unless it has a monitor attached. This makes it useless to us as our servers
are co-located. After a week on the phone to Apple (UK) their position
currently is that *OSX and OSX server do not support headless operation*.
Apple have tested various versions of OSX themselves on several boxes and
have confirmed that the system software will not boot up without a monitor.
The boxes are not even pingable. We have tried gHeads and other monitor
adaptors - and even a trick with a paperclip but these do not solve the
problem (as they used to in the past).
This is obviously going to be a very serious issue for anybody migrating to
OSX with co-located servers - or indeed anyone who wants to use them as a
headless file server in an office.
Does anyone know of any solution to this problem, supported or unsupported
by Apple?
If you are interested and if we hear anything useful I will inform the list.
Feel free to contact me off list at david.hooper@artlogic.net.
This is clearly an issue which, if not resolved, is going to have a
significant impact on us but also all the companies which develop for OSX.
