Will an "active" KVM switch emulate a SVGA, I think, fooling the main unit
into thinking there is a monitor attached?
The other alternative is to run FreeBSD-only, runs fine headless. :))

but co-lo use of Mac's is probably seen as too small a market for Apple to
pursue, esp when something like headless would violate their religion.
