MacOS X Server...From: Shawn Hogan Date: Tuesday, March 16, 1999
Time: 4:39:52 pmI'm just posting this to the list today because there are lots of UNIX
and/or Mac based ISPs on this list that woudl find this interesting...
Well, lots of interesting news from Apple Computer today...
For people that don't know, MacOS X Server is Apple's new OS with a UNIX
(Mach 2.5 kernal with a full BSD 4.4 environment).
MacOS X Server was "officially" released today with some surprises...
It's open-sourced (at least the "guts" of it, so all the UNIX weenies out
there that want to look, change or recompile crap will be able to).
Price was dropped. Originally it was going to be $999. It's $499, and
that price allows you to install it into 5 servers. So really, it's like
$100 a copy. That allows unlimited users too, so you don't have to keep
upgrading your license (like NT Server).
Anyway, I've been playing with it in it's developer form for about a year
now, and it really *is* the best operating system I've ever played with.
You get the power/stability/scaleability of UNIX, with the ease of
administration of a Macintosh (I was going to say Windows, but that could
be debated. hehe).
So you can do anything from a GUI, or if you are a UNIX freak, you can do
*anything* from a BSD shell.
Pretty damn cool I must say... I just got the final copy today, and for
me to click one button to install Apache was pretty cool. I've
configured Apache on some FreeBSD machines, and it wasn't QUITE that
easy. {grin}
Anyway, just a little FYI for everyone out there since you guys deal with
servers a lot...
