Re: How to set up 2xQDNS 3.5 to give local adresses to local usersFrom: Men & Mice Support Date: Wednesday, October 9, 2002
Time: 4:39:53 pmThere are several solutions. A few are presented here.
One solution is to maintain two separate sets of DNS data, one for
internal use and one for public consumption, on separate servers. You
would need to be sure that you never connect to both servers (or both
sets of servers) at the same time. You would only need one
internal-use server.
Another solution would be to give all your internal users a "search
domain" or "default domain" in their TCP/IP settings. For example,
you could configure them all to use "local" as their search domain,
and then create a zone called "mediafront.se.local" that looks
exactly like "mediafront.se", except it uses the internal IP
addresses.
The best solution (IMHO) is to replace your firewall with one that
does two-way NAT, also known as local NAT, or source NAT and
destination NAT (SNAT and DNAT). There are several available,
including at least some Netopia products, some XSense products, and a
couple of software solutions. The fun part is, they may not say that
they do this in their documentation.
The point of two-way NAT is, you can connect from an internal IP
address to a port-mapped port on the NAT server, and then to another
internal IP address, and the connection works just fine. The NAT
server takes care of all the details.
