named logging: /var/log/named.run?
is there a logging statement in named.conf?
syslog file: /var/log/messages ?
(This is what FreeBSD calls it, I haven't acutally worked on OS X)
There is a reason named cannot accees the db.cache file.
if named is running as "named" and least privilege, and db.cache is owned
by root, then that's one problem.

This isn't Microsoft. Unlike Windows where very often the only way to fix
a problem is wipe/re-install the entire OS + apps, there's almost never a
reason for wiping and re-installing *nix (getting cracked is obvious exception)
