Definately sounds like you have a floater record (or two). It could
happen if you had a hard crash at the instant that record we being
created, so in all likelyhood it was *never* a valid customer record.
I would suggest upgrading to 1.8.5 (not because of anything that will fix
it), but because of the nature of the upgrade process, it "self-heals"
floaters so that you will be able to delete them properly.

Auto Assign Customer Number has nothing to do with Customer ID... So that
won't change anything.
