I'm sure there are mirror servers around, but I don't know what they are
off the top of my head...
But you are correct, when you do a whois in your shell, the whois script
on that server contacts Internic using the whois protocol (which happens
to be on TCP port 43... not that anyone cares... hehe).
Then it returns the results.
That's all I'm having Optigold ISP do as well. BUT... I did make it so
you don't have to use internic as your whois server. You can set the
whois server to anything you want. So if you locate a different one you
want to use, you can use that one instead.
