Re: Duplicate Logins and emailsFrom: john@relia.net Date: Wednesday, November 6, 2002
Time: 1:24:04 pmNo, let me try to clarify this, I hate typing novels, but I guess not
everyone can read my mind...
Example
Customer John Doe w/login of "jdoe" password "password"
Has 2 add'l emailboxes of "janedoe" password "whatever"
And "jeffdoe" password "whatever"
When John logs into web interface he see something like this...
Emails For: testtm
The Following Emails Are On File With Your Account
POP janedoe
POP jeffdoe
So I guess John doe thinks his email is missing and adds "jdoe" again and
"newpass" and OPTI lets him!! So now his login is in the main login field
on the account AND under services as an emailbox. I can see the logic for
some ISP's who may do different things between email and radius etc. But
for those of us who use the main login for their email address, I can see
many problems with this.
First of all, a customer who changes their password in 'services' will not
be changing the main account password or vice versa (sp?) even though they
'think' that they are, so how do they keep from getting confused about this?
It seems like OPTI used to not allow this to happen, but then again we use
to have OPTI create the email address automatically to match login, but we
know better now and don't so we can keep logins separate from email
addresses (email addresses should not be in radius)
I'm only guessing here, but I think it has to do with the fact that when a
user clicks on their "View Emails" option on the web interface, it will list
their email addresses in a nice recognizable fashion. But it does not list
their main login (It's shown above in the table header, but not in the list
of emails) So I assume they are thinking that they need to add it, so they
add a new email address which matches their main login (which by default IS
their email address)
Now I have no idea why some people are doing this...all I know is up pops
new emails waiting for server approval, and I happen to recognize some as
already existing logins. And what happens if we try and delete it? Yep, it
deletes the main login.
I hope that this problem makes more sense now, I was thinking it's probably
just something that we don't have checked somewhere in main/prefs, but I'm
not sure what, that's why I'm asking.
Just to clarify other things, we use a mySQL database for radius w/scripts
that connect from OPTI to update the database. So when a user adds a
duplicate email address, our database will kick out an error because it
already exists, but if you delete it, it will delete because the username
matches it to the existing username.
