Shawn does this sound right to you? From: Sam Naugler Date: Monday, December 2, 2002

Shawn does this sound right to you? I sent the original mail to
shawn@digitalpoint.com but I guess it was rerouted to tech support. I am
not trying to be insulting to your staff to ask you personally but I did
tech-support for a lot of years and 'reinstall' or 'upgrade' were seen as
kind of stock answers. As upgrading will be really time-consuming and
probably cause other problems, etc... I sort of wanted to hear from you
that you think this is the right way to go (I know I need to upgrade
anyway, I mean that in the sense of 'to fix this problem'
Here is the history:
Original message:
============================
On Tuesday Optigold crashed and Filemaker Server was stopped as a
service. I restarted the service but Optigold still showed up as
inaccessible from client machines. I double-clicked the MainMenu.fp5 file
and it commenced to opening telling me that files had not been closed
properly along the way. I logged in and had it "Open All" and it kept
going but failed on "LineItems_.fp5" telling me that I needed to run the
recover on that file, which I did (renamed the fixed file, etc...) tried
again, and all seemed fine (since I had it down anyway I installed a new
key, ran windows update, etc...)
On Wednesday I got a couple of complaints that signing-up new users on
the web-interface was slow. I did not think too much of this, rebooted the
web-interface box, etc...
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, not much going on in the office
because of the holiday.
Today there are problems with invoices. Here is what I know:
Generating invoices takes minutes (like 2 to 5 each) where it used to
take seconds.
In one instance printing a 'most recent invoice' for a user produced a
print-out of an invoice from another user from 4 years ago.
On account management the user can log in okay I think, but on the
desktop of the interface machine the only file it makes a pop-up window for
opening is "LineItems_.fp5"...and I think it kind of halts the account
management after logging one person in (the "Web Interface" box which
normally shows the last logged in user, is blank, the buttons hang, and I
do not think others can log in.) I think that crashes it for all others
(sign-ups etc...everything just hangs after one has been opened) (testing
that now).
The invoices that were auto-generated over the last 6 days do not
appear to be screwy in any obvious way.
My questions are: What can I do? If I got to a copy of
LineItems_.fp5 from Tuesday morning what happens with all of the generated
invoices from the week before (Shannon seemed to think that it would be
better to pay you money to fix it than to go through that kind of clean up,
which seems very very bad to me). Would that even work or does everything
have to be reverted? Is there anything that you could do to fix it? What
can I do? Is there any way to re-repair that file? Might rebuilding
indexes help? (Shannon I think had started that already this morning
before noticing the problems so I have not rebooted or anything as those
will run for a couple of hours according to her.)
Here I am again, coyote discovering that he actually did not stop in
time, the roadrunner is only inches away but the coyote is standing on thin
air over a deep deep canyon, his legs disappear in a circle of panicked
thin-air running - at that moment I and the coyote are one.

I would upgrade your copy of data files (even if it's from/to the same
version), as that will extract the raw data and put them into a known clean
set of data files. That will at least get rid of any potential damage to
the structure of the files/code itself.

Okay so, upgrade them from what to what and how? What do you mean
exactly? Do you mean to go through the entire process of an Optigold
upgrade to the lastest version?
Just out of curiosity was this sent on to you by Shawn Hogan (perhaps
as a routine thing...which would be kind of encouraging)?

Reply to response:
Correct, although it doesn't NEED to be the latest version if you didn't
want to (for whatever reason). That will put your data data into a clean
set of data files since it sounds like your data files may have damage
internally.

I'm not sure what you mean? It came from you. I have not talked to him
today.

As an aside, the indexing finished running but did not fix the
problem. It did begin generating invoices (and was hand stopped). Within
a few seconds it had generated 8 invoices (normal speed) but still from a
'regular' account generating invoices seems to hang Optigold altogether.
When it is shut and opened again the invoice appears to have been made and
is newly dated and numbered, but if it is printed it is from 1998 and
someone else's account.
What can I do?
Again, not to be discourteous to your staff. If you think that an
upgrade is the right solution then I will do that for sure. I just do not
want to end up in a worse place by making copies that I have from before
Tuesday obsolete or something.
What do you think?
