Switching ISPsFrom: Simon Wright Date: Wednesday, December 18, 2002
Time: 7:40:32 amI'm a bit puzzled...
We are obliged to switch ISPs since our old one (interpath) decided
they don't want to be in the business. My connection shuts down next
Monday.
I have a replacement and the connection is active.
Of course, this means that I have to switch all my IP numbers. We have
a number of domains that reside here and they are all rooted on
knowledgesharing.com by which I mean that their name server entries at
our domain registrars all refer to "dns1.knowledgesharing.com". The
knowledgesharing.com domain also has name server entry of
"dns1.knowledgesharing.com".
To ease the transition I have set a number of our key systems to use
multi-homing: they have two IP numbers - their original one and one
from my new block of numbers. I have also done this on our name server.
IP 199.72.165.253 and 152.14.10.253 belong to our one name server. I
have also updated my name server so that "dns1.knowledgesharing.com"
has an A record pointing to 152.14.10.253 (it's new number). I have
also added a brand new, never before seen, NS and A record for
"dns.knowledgesharing.com" that also points to 152.14.10.253 in an
effort to stimulate updates.
What I don't understand is why the registrars that we use (jumpdomain
and netsol) know of my name server by its hostname. Surely, at some
point on the internet, my name server must be known by its IP address?
In their name server configuration areas, netsol only show the hostname
while jumpdomain show both the hostname and the old IP address although
only the hostname is changeable.
How would one move a name server to a completely new IP address if that
name server is known by its hostname?
Your thoughts are appreciated.
