Actually, it would complicate things in most cases, would lose some
functionality, would cost far more than the $215 for FileMaker Server and
would also probably have to start charging for all support since the
database server configuration is going to be a hassle for the 90% of ISPs
that don't even know what SQL is.

We would also sell far less copies of Optigold, because for all the stuff it
does, there would end up being a lot of stuff that is going to be specific
to whatever SQL DBMS I would to use.

If you think $215 for a database server is expensive, you may want to check
pricing on things like Oracle, SQL Server, etc...
