Need help splitting a server (DNS, email)From: Richard James Date: Thursday, January 30, 2003
Time: 4:42:56 pmFolks,
New on this list so please excuse if this is not worded exactly right.
I have a machine that has more than one domain hosted. I want to move
what I'll call the primary domain to another machine. I want to make
what is currently what I'll call a non primary domain on the first
machine, the primary domain.
Below is some more detail of what is written above.
I have a box that has 2 IP addresses associated with it. x.x.x.5 and x.x.x.4.
The name of the host is ns.kiaora.com and has an A record pointing it
to the x.x.x.5 address.
Kiaora.com is the default domain within EIMS.
A secondary domain, tfginc.com has as it's IP address within EIMS as
x.x.x.4. tfginc.com has as its MX, ns.kiaora.com
The domain named tfginc.com has an A record pointing it to the x.x.x.4 address.
(I hope I have not lost you yet, I am almost lost)
What I need to do is move kiaora.com over to another box, which I
would renumber as x.x.x.5.
Make tfginc.com the primary domain on the existing server and make it
handle its own NS and be its own MX.
In essence, I need to split kiaora.com and tfginc.com without
impacting service to either.
Mostly I need help with the NS portion to make sure I do not screw
that part up.
But if anyone can offer some steps as to what to do for both EIMS and
NS (and the NIC) to facilitate a smooth splitting, that would be most
appreciative.
I have another box that is identically set up with licensed versions
of OS 9,EIMS 3.1.3, QDNS 2.2.4. My thought is to move the kiaora.com
files (EIMS and QDNS) to the new box. Set the IP address of the new
box to be x.x.x.5.
Remove the second IP address from the first box and set its IP
address to x.x.x.4. Within EIMS set the IP address to the only one
now available (if that is needed).
What I am not so sure about is what changes I need to make within
QNDS, what to tell the NIC and in what order to do these changes. I
know I need to change the MX for tfginc.com, but to what?
I have cranked my TTL's down quite low within both of these domains zone files.
I'll have lawyers to handle the other aspects of the split (divorce)
and am not in a great state of mind to make these changes on my own.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much.
