Forgot part two of your question. No this will not cause problems for
mail since mail delivery is contingent upon your domain name, mail host
name, what you have your mail server configured to accept mail as, and
your MX record.
Create an A record of mail.domain.com for your mail server and set up
your mail servers host name as mail.domain.com with an alias of
domain.com and you should be set.
