Secondary mail servers usually just forward the mail to the primary when
they are available.

This would hold the mail until the primary server is back online, not store
it in a mailbox unless you have the server set to receive the mail as such.
Regardless, the backup server would have a different host name and your mail
customers would have to reconfigure their mail clients to retrieve mail from
the new server.
