That's correct. Most mail servers don't mind, as long as you have
some valid PTR record, but a few will object to your mail server if
your PTR record doesn't match your MX records.

Close. Rather than creating A records for their names (which you
shouldn't do, since you don't own the zone in question), you would
have to use their ugly name in your MX records.
