Reverse DNS optionsFrom: Jim Cobb Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2003
Time: 6:40:24 amI have discovered another issue with 4.5 which was not a problem with
4.02. We have a set of "public" DNS server outside of our NAT'ed
firewall. We also have a set of "private" DNS server internal to our
firewall. We use one copy of DNS central to mange both sets. You always
had to be careful to exclude the appropriate servers when doing updates.
But now QDNS central will sometimes not give the dialog box as to which
servers to apply changes to. Even worse when you do a "create reverse
zones" using the wizard, it replaces the extensive list of reverse
addresses from our abbreviated external DNS server, wiping out several
hundred reverse records.
And even worse when you do a restore from a backup (which had all the
correct information) it uses the external lists (I have no idea where
QDNS gets this list) PLUS it modifies your backup and wipes out all the
main and reverse records there, too!
Thank God I had an excel spreadsheet with all the entire set of
internal DNS info I could copy and paste into our primary server but I
still cannot get the reverse to mirror the internal list! I will be
damned if I am going to do the reverse stuff all manually. I will have
to take my Excel spreadsheet and figure out an calculation to do this
and then paste in the reverse delegation, something 4.02 would do with
no problem.
I assume the solution to this issue is to have separate QDNS Central
server for our internal and external DNS servers, which sucks as I did
not need to do this before...
What on earth is going on?
