that's the best case, if you can swing it.

Apart the actual typing, the other key DNS param it TTL: coming up
to switch over, make it short, then after the switch, back to normal.

aggressive, creative use of $INCLUDE in zone files, and tricks like shared
zones file can greatly reduce the number of records that have to changed
and maintained.

But that takes foresight, not hindsight.

But since re-numbering forces you to hit every zone file, that's the
opportunity to use $INCLUDE.
