To be more specific...
I added a static route for 64.94.110.11 to point to a web server on
our network.
This is:
Name: sitefinder-idn.verisign.com
Address: 64.94.110.11
Basically I just added a simple little static route in my router to
point the IP that users are re-directed to when they mistype a domain
name, or enter one that does not exist to a server on my network. From
there I created a vhost entry and custom web page that (using PHP)
tells the users why the domain name was rejected and gives them the
opportunity to register it with us, if they want..
The nice thing is we log this so we can see exactly how many times
there are mistyped names, expired names, who typed them, when they
typed them, how often, etc.. Very nice over all..
Screw Verisign..
Anyway, no real collateral damage at all. Works like a charm IMHO.
Here is a sample page written in Netcloak.. It is important to note
that this page is not in use and some links may not work, that is
because we shifted gears and decided to finish the project using PHP.
Anyway, the Netcloak one is simple. If anyone wants a copy of it I
would be more than happy to send the raw data which you can swap out
with your own info.
