Correct, it is not relevant, merely cosmetic... I'm not sure why it is
not working for you, as I have never had problems doing this for a
client, ie., getting their domains to show up in order via a whois.

Well DNS and "whois" data are two different things. Your primary DNS
server is defined by you in your DNS zone file, not be the whois data,
again merely cosmetic. Other DNS servers look at your zone for the
primary server, not the whois database :-)
