When doing it on a windows box I tend to go to a single user mode and do the compress. With it running on a linux server, I potentially see the problem where you have multiple users as to click on the "Compress Data Files" button requires us to open it up in windows. One option I can see is to call all on the linux server, move all files to a windows box, run it under single usermode to compress it and then move it back to the linux server.
