Yes the installer will convert the zones to BIND 9!

But one important note here. If you then install OS X 10.3 (which is
the order that I upgraded), your zone file at /etc/named.conf gets
renamed to /etc/named.conf.applesaved. You'll see a new /etc/named.conf
file appear also. You should rename the /etc/named.conf to anything
else you want, and then rename /etc/named.conf.applesaved back to
/etc/named.conf. Your zones will then appear as before.

Then a reboot or reload of the zone will make it all complete. Men &
Mice shared this with me and it worked exactly as stated.
