Panther, shared internet, and QDNS

I'm wondering if anyone else here has experienced the following issue...

I upgraded my small server (G4 tower, with Airport card), to Mac OS
10.3 (clean install), and was able to use it as a software Airport base
station. This was done in the usual fashion by utilizing the "sharing"
system preference.

Afterwards, I installed QuickDNS 4.6, and now when I try to start
internet sharing, it appears to try to start, but ultimately fails. I
have confirmed again that internet sharing seems to work before a QDNS
install, but not afterwards. It appears in particular that the DHCP
server that operates as part of the software base station fails to
start up.

I'm still in the early stages of investigation, but here is what I have
found so far. Apparently, internet sharing in Panther interacts with
several other system components, including "named". There may be other
dns components that are affected, but I haven't gotten very far yet in
isolating these. If this is the case, I'm guessing that when I install
QDNS, I'm overwriting or changing some file or files that are used by
internet sharing in setting up the DHCP capabilities of the software
base station.

I'm going to continue to investigate, but was wondering if anyone has
had any similar experiences, and might be willing to share what they
have done to either investigate or solve this issue. In particular, is
it possible to do a custom installation of QuickDNS that would avoid
this problem?

Thanks,

matt
