Search Again: Telnet From: Shawn Hogan Date: Tuesday, July 21, 1998 Time: 4:35:22 pm Well... about 40 hours of research, tons of RFCs, 5 packet sniffers (on 3 different platforms) later... I *think* I know what the deal with certain BSDI machines is... The API I'm using to invoke the telnet port doesn't allow (at least not that I can figure out) the ability to send the character with the ASCII code of zero. It LOOKS like it's sending it, but it doesn't (thanks to the packet sniffers for that). Most (not all) BSDI machines try to negotiate the Binary Transmission mode option (which just HAPPENS to be ASCII code zero). So my telnet thing sees the server trying to negotiate the binary tranmission mode, so it tells the server not to enter into binary mode... Except my telnet program leaves the zero character out of the negotiation string, so the server doesn't know what option it's negotiating. So it drops the connection. Other UNIX boxes don't try to negotiate Binary Transfer, so there is no problem with them. Anyway, I have a call into the guy that wrote the telnet API to see if I can get this problem fixed. - Shawn ------------------------------- Shawn D.
