Good point. If the SOA mname (the first field in the record's data)
doesn't contain the name of a server used in an NS record, things can
get interesting with regard to updates.
I'm not convinced of the notify issue, but that may be because my
understanding of the mechanism is imperfect.

Yes, that's what I meant, the zone's authority NS records (as opposed
to other NS records in the zone, which would be delegation records
for subzones).
[For the audience: This is yet another example where even the experts
use terms differently. I once had a similar issue when talking to
Cricket Liu. It's all part of what makes DNS so interesting.]

That's too often true. When people try to get cute without knowing
what they're doing, problems nearly always arise.
