This has been my experience, YMMV.

I have found that it is much easier to use ssh connections to the
servers and execute custom perl scripts to modify the mysql db. Every
time I have tried to use the SQL hooks, I run into the following
problems. Note: These are not problems with the software.

1. Forgot to install mysqlODBC on a particular workstation... oops
2. Need to select some data to modify a record and can't
3. Failed or duplicate inserts when doing create/recreate

I have written scripts in perl that do this functionality as well as
logging data to a logfile, executing build statements on the server.
All with a single script...
