Just finished last week bringing both dns servers up to date. I had my master at 3.5 and the slave at 4.5. You will need to use different admin programs for each version as they don't work for both. In my case, I would make changes to the primary and then have to go to the slave and click on the domain and then make it reload. Otherwise it wouldn't automatically update anymore.
