Re: v3.5.3 on OS X ?From: Men & Mice Support Date: Sunday, July 25, 2004
Time: 10:28:09 amYou should know that the AppleScripts that ship with QuickDNS 3.5.1
largely don't work with Mac OS X 10.1 and later. Apple changed how
file handlers are scoped in 10.1.
So if you want to migrate your data from the old format to the new
format, using the AppleScripts we included, you'll need to run them
on Mac OS 9. Not under Classic, because that doesn't work at all, but
really on Mac OS 9.
Also, you should know about BIND versions. QuickDNS 3.5.1 doesn't
support BIND 9, so you'll need to use BIND 8, version 8.2.3 or later.
The QuickDNS Remote 3.5.1 installer will install BIND 8.2.4 for you.
Note that Mac OS X 10.3 ships with BIND 9. The problem with all of
this is, BIND 8.2.4 has at least one major security flaw. So you'll
want to upgrade to at least BIND 8.3.4. The only way I know of is to
install the Developer Tools from Apple, download the source code from
ISC (isc.org), and compile and install. Instructions are included
with the source code. Make the following changes on the "./configure"
command line:
- Set the base install location to /usr, not /usr/local.
- Make sure named-xfer gets installed in /usr/libexec.
- Set the install location for manpages to /usr/share/man.
- Reset the location to look for named.conf to /etc.
I think that covers it, but I haven't compiled BIND 8 in a while. You
might want to try this out on a fresh system that you can recreate
easily, before installing any other software. Or else make a thorough
backup (psyncx works great) and be prepared to correct mistakes.
