Re: Gentoo InstallFrom: Men & Mice Support Date: Monday, August 16, 2004
Time: 5:36:43 pmWe've only had a few other requests for gentoo support. Basically, we
don't provide any distribution for distributions other than Red Hat
and SuSE (x86 only).
QuickDNS Remote and QuickDNS Central are indeed just C programs,
compiled for Linux/x86 with a particular set of libraries. If you can
get past that hurdle, the only other things to worry about are the
boot scripts and the (re)arrangement of the existing BIND
configuration.
For the boot scripts, use whatever works on your gentoo installation.
If gentoo provides easy-to-understand boot scripts for other
services, just copy one of those and change it. Otherwise, figure out
what is expected of a boot script, and then write one. If all else
fails, we can help (within limits). Keep the following in mind:
- If named runs in a chroot environment, QuickDNS Remote must also.
Use the -t option. (Running in a chroot environment may require
adding one or two items in /dev [relative to the jail], so keep an
eye on QuickDNS Remote's error messages.)
- If named runs as a non-root user (recommended for Linux
environments), so must QuickDNS Remote. Use the -u option. You can
also use the -g option to specify a group when creating files.
- Use the -debug and -ll5 options when you're trying to figure things
out. This dumps all error messages to stderr instead of syslogd, and
turns up the logging level.
- QuickDNS Central understands the same options, but it's usually not
necessary or desirable to run QuickDNS Central in the same chroot
jail as QuickDNS Remote.
For the rearrangement of BIND's configuration, you might be able to
use the 'arrange' utility in the installer directory, or you may want
to install on another platform (e.g. Red Hat), and then copy the
configuration files to the gentoo server. If all else fails, you can
arrange manually using the description of what goes where in the
installation instructions.
