Re: Moving to windowsFrom: mattb Date: Wednesday, August 18, 2004
Time: 12:06:10 pmInteresting here. QuickMail went POP3 a long time ago, which meant=20
that any server or client could easily replace it. We transitioned a=20=
long time ago from Quickmail to Eudora clients and Linux based servers.=20=
It was cheaper than upgrading Quickmail at the time and we did not=20
hear a single complaint from any of the 280 people.
I'm curious of this:
"Plus the FDA frowns on multi-platform medical device manufacturers=20
(which they have determined we are, being a tissue bank and all)=20
sooooo, we are now on the hellbound train."
and would like to know more about this off-list. A recent visit to a=20
hospital I noticed that damn near everything came from a different=20
vender and each used a base OS that was different. The medical devices=20=
ranged from HP's running HP/UX to Sun Workstations being used for=20
imaging.
I believe that all the hospitals and clinics in the area are using a=20
Linux or Unix based server for email, web hosting, and DNS. DHCP is=20
being handled by Cisco equipment.
Abandoning any platform based on the experience of a vender problem,=20
hmm, I'm not sure about that one. I've been able to get Radeon 7000=20
cards pretty readily. I've got about 7 of them around here now.
I'm not a huge Apple fan when it comes to servers. It's taken them=20
four revisions to even get close to solving the permissions problems. =20=
I'm still trying to figure out why Apple's version of SAMBA doesn't=20
seem to be as easy to set up as one under Linux.
Something that really is sticking me is why does it matter what your=20
servers are for development purposes? Meaning, even if I have a UNIX=20=
based server, it doesn't mean that my development platform must be UNIX=20=
based.
ps. I am not a fan of MS-Server products. The learning curve is much=20=
higher than Linux based solutions, the cost is higher to implement, and=20=
the performance just does not match up.
