Scott,

I don't know what all you are doing with that Mac OS X box, but for me, I
replaced Mac OS with Yellow Dog Linux for my router/firewall/dns1 box. It's
a 300 MHz G3. It is running BIND 9, and I have never noticed this problem,
even now.

As for 1U servers? I have an old Sun Cobalt RaQ 4 running the 550 OS (also
BIND 9) I paid $200 for on eBay.
