That's because Mac OS X 10.3.x ships with 9.2.2, and the upgrade
overwrote version 9.2.3 with the older version.

No, not really. You lose the ability to have delegation-only zone
statements (to prevent the NetSol Site Finder wildcard records, and
others like them). But that should be the only real difference.

That's because that's all it can figure out in a reliable way - it
doesn't know for sure where the named binary is located in the file
system.
