What in the hell is an ambient orb?
It's a high-tech gadget that glows a certain color (or animates with color cycling) to show changes in things (for example stocks, weather, traffic, etc.). It does not require Internet access or a computer and works anywhere in the United States.
How does it work if it doesn't require Internet or a computer?
Essentially it's a fancy pager. It uses the US network of antennas for pagers. Since everyone has cell phones now, those pager antennas are probably not used much. So the guys that made the ambient orb had the idea to utilize them to feed data to the orbs.
What does this have to do with the keyword tracker?
The manufacturers offer a developer kit/API to control any orb that has been setup for developer access. So, for pure geek factor, we've setup an option in the keyword tracker to automatically update your orb based on your ranking movements for the day. The greener the better your rankings are doing. The redder the orb, the worse they are doing. After you run a "Check All" for your keywords, the keyword tracker sends an update signal to your orb with the appropriate color.
I want one of these. How much does it cost and where do I get one?
The orb itself costs $150. In order to receive data from custom channels, you need to pay for the Premium channels for your orb (which costs roughly $1 per week).

Okay, I have one. How do I make it work with the keyword tracker?
In the ambient web interface you use to manage your devices, change your orb's "channel" to the My Custom Data channel. In your keyword tracker preferences, set the serial number of your orb. That's it... you are all done.
How long does it take to update?
I wish it was a little faster. So far in my tests, it seems to take about 30 minutes to update. The keyword tracker issues the color update command when the "Check All" process is finished.
