Design process: optimize for the scarcest resource

    by Rian van der Merwe
    Feb 28, 2013
In his thoughts on design process Kevin Anderson quotes a very interesting paragraph from Fred Brooks’s book The Design of Design:

The critical thing about the design process is to identify your scarcest resource. Despite what you may think, that very often is not money. For example, in a NASA moon shot, money is abundant but lightness is scarce; every ounce of weight requires tons of material below. On the design of a beach vacation home, the limitation may be your ocean-front footage....

The idea is that if you do a search, you’ll see matching information from your calendar showing within Google’s search results, when it’s relevant.

For example, Google shared this screenshot showing matches appearing in a search for “what is on my calendar today:”

When you perform a search at Google, and you have a set of search results in front of you, how do you decide what to click upon? How do you judge the page titles, the snippets, and the URLs that you see. How does Google decide what to show you? A little more than a [...]

    The thing that breaks us

    by Rian van der Merwe
    Feb 25, 2013
It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.

    — Lou Holtz (retired American football coach, author, and motivational speaker)

The pressures of two kids, a career, and a life that’s just public enough to invite some nastiness every once in a while can really wear you down.

So it’s easy to fix your eyes on the...

Some of you may remember that I have started training parkour some time ago. It made me not only 200% healthier over the recent years (I feel 10 years younger by now) it also inspired me in other areas of life.

I've already coined a new term for a positive SEO technique that I call "Google Parkour" which basically means helping your "competitors" by linking out to them and ultimately getting traffic from them. It doesn't work completely as imagined but it works to some extent. It works...
