More Project Glass Patents, Part 2
In the first part of this series, Google Glass Hardware Patents, Part 1, I looked at 5 patent filings from Google published over the past couple of weeks, about Project Glass. Those included (1) a closer look at the optical systems that Google Glass might use, (2) how a bone conducting system might provide audio [...]

Google Glass Hardware Patents, Part 1
Google’s Project Glass has the potential to bring something completely new to consumers – wearable computing devices that could revolutionize how consumers interact with the Web. The augmented reality glasses aren’t yet available to consumers, and are a work in progress. Google is holding its first developer workshops this week, offering developers the chance to [...]

High Rankings Question of the Week
What I learned about design in 2012
One of my favorite articles of 2011 was What I Learned About the Web in 2011 on A List Apart. In particular, Erin Kissane’s call to respect complexity stayed with me all through 2012:
If a single idea has followed me around this year, from politics to art and work to friendships, it’s been this one: “it’s more complicated than that.”
It’s centrally important to seek simplicity, and especially to avoid making things hard to use or understand. But if we want to make things that are...

The growing complexity creep in Apple’s products
It’s a somewhat uneven article, but Dave Wiskus makes some good points in The secret of Apple’s design success: the humane interface. I did get a bit uneasy when I got to this part:
Where Apple differs from its competition isn’t in aesthetic beauty, it’s in the company’s ability and willingness to make decisions on behalf of its users. […] Apple’s take is to remove complexity and make choices long before the user sees the product.
It’s an argument that’s often used by Apple fans to...

A Year Later, Google’s Block Sites Feature Remains Blocked
In 2011, Google rolled out a feature allowing searchers to block web sites they don’t like from appearing in its search results, which drew great attention. That got dropped last year, when Search Plus Your World was launched last January. A year later, Google says there are no firm plans for it to return. Google’s Blocked Sites Feature
The block feature, which was released in March 2011, placed a small “block” link next to any result in Google’s listings:
Clicking on that link...

Panda: What Happened To Fixing The Scraper Issue?
Wasn't the whole point of the scraper algorithm and the continued Panda updates about making sure quality original sourced content ranks in Google and now stolen/scraped content?
It seems like recently Google is back to where they started from prior to February 2011

That Update Google Denied; Seems Like A Brand Signal Update
On January 17th, we reported on a pretty significant Google update that Google denied and then five days later they pushed out a Panda refresh. No...
Kodak Not Enough: Google Acquires Printer and Camera Patents from Silverbrook
A couple of weeks ago, a federal bankruptcy judge approved the sale of Kodak’s patent portfolio to a group of companies that joined together to buy them at a discounted price. The group included Apple, Google, Facebook, and others. There were more than 1,000 patents involved, related to photography, storing photos, and sharing photos.

Google Launches Streamlined Image Search
Like how Google Image Search works on a tablet? Good news, then. That simplified experience is coming to Google Images on the desktop. Out With The Old
Currently, viewing an image through Google Image Search is a multistep process. You do the search, see several images and can hover to get a slightly larger thumbnail:
