Earlier this week, we reported a glitch in Google Search, where clicking on a link after a search for Gmail listed someone’s email address, complete in a window ready to send them email. With today’s Gmail outage, that error — never fixed — has resulted in at least one person getting thousands of unwanted emails.

You can still see the error now. Search for “gmail” in Google:

Under the main listing, you’ll see an “Email” link — what’s called a “sitelink” that’s designed to help people...

Justin Jackson’s This is real life is probably one of my favorite posts of the year so far. I don’t want to spoil it, so I’ll just quote this bit:

You see, I can pretend to be cool on the Internet, but in real life I’m just a dad in a bathrobe.

Justin, from a fellow dad in a bathrobe:

By default, searches on Yahoo.com are now done through a secure server. That means more protection for searchers but less data for search marketers about how they are receiving traffic. Any visits from Yahoo done via search will appear as if someone came to a site directly. As a result, Yahoo’s apparent popularity as a traffic driving source will appear to plunge.

Yahoo Makes Secure Search The Default is our story on Marketing Land with more details about the shift. In summary, it’s still...

Expedia appears to have been hit by a Google penalty related to unnatural links. So what do Google and Expedia have to say about the situation? No comment.

As covered yesterday, the visibility of Expedia listings in Google appears to have recently plunged, according to measurements by Searchmetrics:

This comes after accusations last month, which sparked discussion, that Expedia was obtaining links in a way that go against Google’s guidelines.

So, did Google punish Expedia and if...

    by Tadeusz Szewczyk
    Jan 21, 2014
This is a guest post by Matt Cutts, Google’s “head of spam” by day and well known SEO blogger by night. I added some text decoration here and there to stress the main message.

In my recent article on the decay of guest blogging for SEO I raised some of the most common issues regarding low quality albeit spammy link building with guest articles. This article raised some eyebrows to say the least. To make it unmistakably clear that guest blogging is not bad by definition I decided to speak out...
