Coming out of Google I/O at Moscone Center in San Francisco yesterday, I did a double-take. Was that Microsoft pitching its “Bing It On” challenge against Google directly across the street. Yep.

“Put the science back in computer science: test your Google bias inside” read a big banner, over the entrance to the Metreon Mall, which is across from Moscone.

Inside, there’s a “Bing In On” kiosk:

One side is just an invitation to take the challenge; you actually do the challenge on...

How Google May Rank Web Sites Based on Quality Ratings

    by Bill Slawski
    May 15, 2013
Google was granted a patent this week that describes how web sites might be given quality ratings, based upon a model that looks at human ratings for a sample set of sites, and web site signals from those sites.

The patent tells us that the advantage of such an approach would be to: Provide [...]

Want to have your company logo appear in Google search results similar to how authors get to have their pictures displayed? Google’s now announced support for that through “organization markup.” But it’s not quite the “publishership” that some have been expecting.

Google explains its post today that Schema.org organization markup can be used to do this to have a preferred logo appear in its results, saying: A business whose homepage is www.example.com can add the following markup using...

Google has allowed you to speak your search to it on the desktop and mobile devices for some time, but now it’s going to get smarter — talking back to you and continuing the conversation you started.

Google shared details at its Google I/O 2013 developer event today and also in a blog post that’s gone up.

The idea is that your devices —  smartphone or desktop — will apparently be constantly listening for the “OK Google” command. If you say that, then it knows you want to do a search....

Why does Google show multiple results from the same domain?

    Built to last

Jason Fried, co-founder of 37signals, in an interview with The Great Discontent:

People should consider the value of a long-term investment in something. Can you make your idea your life’s work instead of your life’s work being 30 ideas?

I’m more of a fan of constant, steady growth because it feels more sustainable over a long period of time. Creating things that are lasting is what great cultures do. [...] What are we creating today that’s going to last for 20, 50, or 100 years?...

As I covered yesterday, in very brief summary, Google's Matt Cutts told us ten SEO changes coming to Google by the end of this summer. One of those changes is softening the impact of the Panda algorithm for sites that are in the "gray area" or "border" of being impacted by the Panda algorithm...

    Leaving gadgets on the table

Nick Bilton in Disruptions: Even the Tech Elites Leave Gadgets Behind, an article on the growing (not just hipster any more?) trend to step away from technology every once in a while:

As every aspect of our daily lives has become hyperconnected, some people on the cutting edge of tech are trying their best to push it back a few feet. Keeping their phone in their pocket. Turning off their home Wi-Fi at night or on weekends. And reading books on paper, rather than pixels.

    The “phone...

We just recently taped a new round of webmaster videos, and I thought this video deserved a full-fledged blog post. This is my rough estimate (as of early May 2013) of what search engine optimizers (SEOs) and webmasters should expect in the next few months:

Bear in mind that this is a very rough estimate, because priorities, projects, and timing can change based on a lot of different factors. But I hope this gives folks a ballpark idea of what to expect in the coming months as far as...
