The ongoing WebmasterWorld thread and dozens of posts in the Google Webmaster Help forum suggest that around September 20th, Google did some sort of larger update.

    Let me start by saying...

    iOS 7 Parkour

I’m mesmerised by the animations in iOS 7, and none more so than the experience of opening and exiting an app within a folder. To me, it feels like you’re doing Parkour through your apps, deftly using your surroundings to propel yourself forward and maintain as much momentum as possible.

It’s also a great example of iOS 7′s depth, and proof that the design is not as flat as most people would have us believe. Justin Williams sums this up really well in his post Layer Cake:

    iOS 7 is...

When It Comes To Google, Microsoft’s Ballmer Is Still Fighting Old Battles With Old Tactics

I’ve watched Microsoft fight Google in search for a very long time. Bing has come a long way, and I’ve been pleased to see a strong competitor emerge. But Microsoft hasn’t actually hurt Google’s share. It’s only robbed from its partner, Yahoo. So how’s Microsoft going to beat Google? Comments from departing CEO Steve Ballmer suggest there are no new tactics in the playbook.

Ballmer spoke yesterday at Microsoft Financial Analyst Meeting 2013, saying that, among other things that Google was a...

You should read these two zombie books

This isn’t a zombie blog1. Still, I’d be doing you a huge disservice if I didn’t tell you about two excellent zombie books I read recently. The books are great because yes, they have zombies in them, but they’re not actually about zombies. They’re about how humans treat each other when we turn on each other. How it’s easy to speak about our values but a bit harder to stick to those values when the going gets really tough. And that’s a topic worth exploring.

The first book I want to...

3 Methods Fueled by Data and Tools to Earn More (and Better) Links - Whiteboard Friday

    Sep 19, 2013
Most conversations about links today involve terms like "better links," or "high-quality links." Those are the kinds we all hope to earn, but what exactly defines a "better link?" How do we know whether a link qualifies, or is only so-so?

In today's Whiteboard Friday, Rand clears up the confusion and offers a few clear attributes of better links, walking us through three great ways to...

Driving Directions vs. Reviews as Ranking Signals for Google Maps

    Sep 18, 2013
In my college days, I cooked at some local restaurants (free meals made it an attractive option for a starving college student). One of the restaurants was in the center of town, at one end of Main Street, and it was a popular place for local...

Apple’s new iOS 7 mobile operating system officially rolled out today, and with it, the Siri assistant is finally out of beta. The most significant change to Siri is arguably that it no longer taps into Google for searches. As expected, a deal with Microsoft now makes Bing the default in Siri. Twitter also gets a new place within the tool. Supporting Role, Not Starring Role, For Bing

After last year’s disaster of iOS 6 switching from Google Maps to Apple’s own maps, Apple might perhaps be...
