    May 18, 2015
Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal reports that Google is to compete with Amazon and eBay by offering a new ad model to enable advertisers to let Google be their shopping site, where you click buy now and checkout directly at Google...

Google Patents How it May Make Recommendations for Spots to take Photos

    by Bill Slawski
    May 17, 2015
A recently granted Google patent explains how Google may find and recommend locations for people to take pictures at. It describes how it might use something like Google Now to recommend “photogenic locations to visit.” The patent tells us: The...

Combinatorial innovation and the automation of jobs

    by Rian van der Merwe
    May 17, 2015
John Naughton wrote another interesting “the machines are coming for our jobs!” article1. This one is from the angle of “combinatorial innovation”—the idea that innovation happens when a bunch of disparate advances in technology come together in an unexpected way. His point in We are ignoring the new machine age at our peril is that it’s hard to see the implications of this kind of innovation:

The implications of [the self-driving] vehicle stretch far beyond the future of the...

    Lean vs. Design?

    by Rian van der Merwe
    May 16, 2015
This is sure to be a bit controversial, but Jon Kolko makes some great points about design-led vs. lean development in Lean Doesn’t Always Create the Best Products:

And with this, we arrive at perhaps the most important distinction between an empathetic design-led approach and Lean. Lean is fast. Design is slow. Design is more contemplative, reflective, and because it demands systems thinking and marinating in the ambiguity of cultural data, it simply takes longer. The benefit is in...

    Using process for good

    by Rian van der Merwe
    May 15, 2015
Kate Heddleston makes some great points in The Null Process:

When people say they don’t want process, what they’re really saying is they don’t want formalized process. There is really no such thing as “no process.” A process is simply the steps it takes to complete a task, so if a task is completed then by definition a process was used. Without formalized process everyone does things their own way, and there is no documentation for how problems are solved. This informal, undocumented...

Facebook Instant Articles and the web performance gap

    by Rian van der Merwe
    May 15, 2015
The big news in our neck of the woods this week is the launch of Facebook’s Instant Articles. Although the handwringing about the open web and the future of publishing is important, there’s a tangential discussion going on in the web community that I find particularly interesting. It’s about the focus Facebook puts on the speed of the feature. It starts with the name Instant, and continues to play a big role in their marketing materials:

Articles load instantly, as much as 10 times...

Is It Time For Google To Rank Paid News Content Better?

For years, Google has suppressed the ability for paid news content to rank well in its search results. It’s time for that to change, given how Google doesn’t suppress other types of paid content. The change may help people value news content more. It might also produce real revenues for news publishers, if they can come together on an “all access” subscription plan run through Google. The Paid News Problem

Many news publications have “paywalls,” where people can’t read content unless...

    Early Panda and Concept Templates

    by Bill Slawski
    May 14, 2015
In the blog post, Searching Google for Big Panda and Finding Decision Trees I tried to guess the identity of the Mysterious “Panda” that a recent (at that time) update was named after, as we had been told in a Wired Magazine Article. I guessed...

Bing To Rank Mobile Friendly Web Pages Better

    by rustybrick
    May 14, 2015
Bing announced they will be launching their own version of a mobile friendly algorithm in the upcoming months for the Bing mobile search results.
This is similar to Google's mobile friendly algorithm in so many ways but in Bing's case, they won't be giving a date with this announcement and they are saying relevancy, no matter what, will always be more important than if a site renders nicely on mobile devices.

    Technical debt and the ceiling

    by Rian van der Merwe
    May 13, 2015
Shaun McCormick describes Why the way we look at technical debt is wrong:

Technical debt is ok, and often a solid product strategy. The importance is getting to market. When launching a new system or feature, focus your effort and time on areas of the product that need to be agile, and move quickly through areas that don’t. Later, if the product proves that it can drive revenue, you can revisit those areas and improve if they need to scale.

This is an excellent sentiment, and I...
